Brother Spotlight: Tim Ruff

Tim Ruff

While you can usually catch Brother Tim Ruff studying music or belting opera songs, you will probably be most impressed with his skill on a guitar and unbelievable songwriting skills. Tim Ruff joined the house during Fall Rush of 2007, as a sophomore vocal performance major. Known affectionately in the house as the Pun Chair, he has also held the position of House Manager and is currently in the Epsilon challenge. In the Big Three, he has been an incredible asset to Greek Sing, helping drive Sigma Phi Epsilon’s 2nd place finish in 2008 as Hercules in Hercules, and the 2nd place finish in 2009 as Simba in Lion King. In addition, he holds the title of Mr. Fraternity 2008, has served as an Orientation Counselor, and was inducted into Lamda Sigma, a sophomore honors society.

However, it is Tim Ruff’s personal music that truly demonstrates his musical talent and commitment to excellence. What started as a casual hobby of composing guitar ditties and vocal pieces in high school, has quickly evolved into a successful songwriting and performances across Carnegie Mellon University. Tim Ruff says, “Its all thanks to the brothers, they really made me confident in my own musical creations, and helped me take my music from just my room, to the entire campus, and now the world,” Debuting to campus in Fall 2008, Tim Ruff performed with the Tim Ruff Trio and won Battle of the Bands. This provided the opportunity to perform at Homecoming 2008, and since then it has been smooth sailing, with performances across campus. Brother Tim is now auditioning with several producers, and hopes to continue playing music as a career.
