Balanced Man Scholarship

The Balanced Man Scholarship is awarded each year to the most ‘balanced’ incoming freshmen. Sigma Phi Epsilon utilizes the Balanced Man Scholarship to acknowledge and commend students that exemplify the four characteristics we value the most in our brothers – athleticism, leadership, scholarship, and gentlemanliness.

The Balanced Man Ideal is central to Sigma Phi Epsilon. We encourage brothers to live a balanced life—continually developing and achieving in all aspects of their lives. The Balanced Man Scholarship allows Sigma Phi Epsilon to give back to the community and show that fraternities are more than the stereotypical ‘Animal House’ fraternity.

After three phases of application reviews and interviews, the winner, “The Balanced Man” receives a $1,000 scholarship and the runner-up, a $500 scholarship.

Each year, we receive hundreds of applications from diversely qualified incoming first-year students. Applicants are often presidents of student organizations, noted actors or athletes and innovative student leaders. At the same time, they have a strong academic record and gave back to their community by helping others.

The application process is simple and straightforward:

  1. Fill out the online application before August 1st, 2011 and email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  2. The scholarship committee scores the applications and the top applicants will be selected to have an interview at their home over the summer if possible
  3. A second round of interviews will be performed on campus during the week of orientation or the first week of class
  4. Once the interviews are complete, the scholarship committee reconvenes and announces the finalists
  5. The finalists are invited to a banquet at the fraternity house during early September, and the Balanced Man Scholarship Winner is announced

We encourage all incoming freshman—regardless of intended major or college—to demonstrate their commitment to a Balanced Ideal by applying to the 2011-2012 scholarship.

Good luck,

Sean Chin, Austin Bohn, Anthony Pacella, and Brandon Dzirko
